Although we use our eyes everyday, many of us rarely pay attention to them until there is a serious problem. If you were asked, "Do you take care of your eyes once a week or at least once a month?", the most common reply would probably be in the negative. Although the eyes are one of the most important organs in our body, people often neglect to care for them. You can maintain healthy, beautiful looking eyes for most of your life by following some simple tips.
Beautiful Eyes - Taking Care of Your Eyes
If you really want to take care of your eyes start by eating lots of fruits and vegetables. Carrots are especially helpful in maintaining healthy eyes. They are loaded with Vitamin A and beta carotene. Blueberries are loaded with eye healthy and vision preserving carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin, and flavonoids like rutin, resveratrol and quercitin. And they contain a wealth of minerals needed for vision and overall health, like selenium and zinc. Cabbage is also loaded with Vitamin A, as well as Vitamins B, C, and D.
Protect your eyes from dust, smoke, strong sunlight and strong wind. If possible, avoid staying very long in such conditions.Wear safety glasses while at work or play that may cause injury to your eyes. Avoid wearing contact lenses for more than 12 hours. Doing so can irritate your eyes as well as cause extreme discomfort. Make sure you have good lighting when reading and doing other close-up work. Using your eyes in dim light can cause eyestrain, as can staring at a computer screen for too long. And of course, never look directly into the sun.
Another simple way of protecting your eyes is through 'palming'. Simply rub the palms of both hands together for about 30 seconds, close your eyes and gently place the warm palms over the eyes. You can also dip a cotton ball in warm water and then keep it on the eyes for 10 minutes. Both techniques will give you a feeling of relaxation.
For tired eyes caused by lack of sleep, tension, stress, etc., try one of these homemade remedies:
Soak two cotton pads in icy cold water and then place them over the eyes to reduce swelling and redness.
Dip two cotton balls in cold whole milk, wring them out, and then apply them to your eyelids. The fat in the milk will hydrate your parched skin and reduce swelling, says dermatologist Jeanette Jacknin, MD, author of Smart Medicine for Your Skin.
For conjunctivitis, put one drop of honey directly in each eye, or put three tablespoons of honey in 2 cups of boiling water, stir to dissolve, let it cool, then use it as an eyewash. The honey has antibacterial properties and unpasteurized honey has antibiotic properties. The honey will soothe the eye and help promote healing.
Beautiful Eyes - Taking Care of Your Eyes: Tips
1. Protect your eyes from dust, smoke, strong sunlight and strong wind.
2. Eat lots of green vegetables, fish and fresh fruits, especially carrots and blueberries which are enriched in vitamins and antioxidants.
3. Wear safety glasses while at work or play that may cause injury to your eyes.
4. Always use sunglasses during the peak day time hours to protect your eyes from the harmful effects of the suns rays.
5. A great way to remove eye makeup is to use baby shampoo. "Tear free" baby shampoo is a great way to remove mascara (even waterproof!), eyeshadow and eyeliner. It removes it in seconds. Just wet the area of your eyes with some tap water, apply a small amount of baby shampoo and massage it until some foam appears, then rinse off with lukewarm water.
6. The old reliable method of placing a slice of potato or cucumber on both the eyes. After 10 minutes remove the slices and wash the eyes. This helps reduce under eye wrinkles and dark circles around the eyes.
Beautiful Eyes - Taking Care of Your Eyes: Don'ts of Eye Care
1. Don't wear contact lenses for extended periods of time or overnight as this can lead to irritation, discomfort, and more serious complications.
2. Don't rub your eyes. Doing so can cause an eye infection since few of us bother to wash our hands before touching our eyes.
3. Don't read or do close-up work in dim or poor light. Doing so causes unnecessary strain on your eyes.
